#022 A TRUE FRIEND



Horror gripped the heart of a World War I soldier as he saw his lifelong friend fall in battle. Caught in a trench with continuous gunfire whizzing over his head, the soldier asked his lieutenant if he might go out into the “no man’s land” between the trenches to bring his fallen comrade back.


“You can't go,” said the lieutenant, “I don’t want you to risk your life for someone that is probably dead, you may throw your life away.” The lieutenant’s advice didn’t matter, and the soldier managed to go anyway. Miraculously he was able to reach his friend, hoist him onto his shoulder and bring him back to their company’s trench. As the two of them tumbled in together to the bottom of the trench, the officer was furious, he looked at the wounded soldier.
“I commanded you not to go” he said. “Your friend is dead and you are mortally wounded.”
“It was worth it, sir,” said the soldier.
“What do you mean; worth it?” responded the Lieutenant. “Your friend is dead and you are about to die.”
“Yes, Sir” the private answered. “But it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive and I had the satisfaction of hearing him saying, “Jim…, I knew you’d come.”


Many times in life, whether a thing is worth doing or not, really depends on how you look at it. Take up all your courage and do something your heart tells you to do so that you may not regret not doing it later in your life, but be careful because "everything is permissible for me, but not everything is beneficial" May each and every one of you be blessed with the company of TRUE FRIENDS. A true friend is one who walks in, when the rest of the world walks out. War doesn’t determine who’s right. War only determines who’s left.

    Undoubtedly, I believe that the greatest treasures of this life aren't material.. A clear example of this is friendship. Only in the worst moments true friends are known. ..

      Indeed, I love this story because it reminds me of a famous saying, "A real friend is hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget"

    to be honest, i was thinking that this history is real life about your friends, because for me this was very good example about who is your friend and your best friend. now understand, may someone can said that is your friend when you dont have matters, but when you are having problems only the best friend can help. and this soldier wounded believe it. example in my case i have got good friends until the death, good reflections because one true friend in the worst and the good times, peru football fan. #rusia2018 .... thanks Sandro for good reflections on life. - i forward to hearing from you

      In fact, who knows? Perhaps this story is real, but real or not, it is a good example to identify real friends as you said people can say they are your friends just orally but how about facts? I mean you don't need to sacrifice to show it but to be loyal even when we don't have anything, where are they? The majority disappear, don't they?     Wow! I didn’t expect this harrowing end. From my perspective, friendship is an important situation in the lives of the people, although some of them confuse it with fellowship or to be an acquaintance. However, the friendship is more than that. It develops with the advance of the tic-tac of the clock, it grows alongside the seasons, and it finally becomes in a support both in the sunny or rainy moments. In conclusion, it’s something very valuable and would be worth to fight for it until the end. The finish of the story is so sad, but at least, the friend of the protagonist died with the experience that his friend went to help him, despite the situation that threatened his life.

      Yup, the ending is tragic, however it teaches us that real friends do everything for us because they are like relatives, members of our family, they do not betray us or place us at risk, they give us advice and encourage us to do the right things.

    This fact is so crude but in the same time is so real, because true friends are not chosen they are a blessing from God. And when you know your true friend you know that he will always be and never leave you. I really believe in this phrase "A real friend will stand by you in good times, a true friend will sit with you in bad times but your best friend will stay with you till eternity"

      So do I, but tbh how hard is to find real friends, they are blessings but sometimes we tend to fall apart because of different reasons that happen in life, so maybe they weren't real friends? uhmmm only God knows.

    I agree with that reflection. Well, personally I think that friendship is the best gift of our friends. There is a saying "who has a friend has a treasure", and it is true. Those of us who have the fortune to enjoy our friends are immensely rich, because sincere friendship is one of the most beautiful things that exist. Friendship implies many values including respect, trust, loyalty, etc.

    Friends really give everything in a disinterested way, without asking, without demanding. They are there when we need them, they offer us a hug, they share our sorrows and they celebrate with us our triumphs and joys. Sometimes you can spend time without talking or holding a meeting, but we know that they are there, that friendship and affection endure. I believe that life is short and you have to know how to take it and with whom to share it, and friends are the family that one chooses.

      Gr8 saying "Whoever finds a faithful friend, finds a treasure". As someone said before sometimes friends help more than relatives. We gotta be careful when we choose our friends, we must understand they are not perfect but they shouldn't betray us cus' it means they weren't real friends.

    When i finished to read this story, i noticed the lack of appreciation for the human life that some people felt, such as the leader of the troop who didn't care about the death of his soldiers and he saw like one more. That is what happens in wars, the true value of the human is lost and they are seen like machines to kill. But in the midst of this situation, there are men who value the true meaning of the friendship and they would give his life for that.
    I think that they had a philosophical friendship and for this reason he didn't leave her, a true friend is who help you to grow, see your progress and is proud of it; like if you feel bad, he will takes care of you and protect.
    A true friend never will leaves you.

    When I finished reading the story a tear fell from me, friendship is one of the most important elements for our lives. A true friend will always be with you in good and bad times; despite all the problems that can appear, if you are together you can overcome them.
    The company of a good friend can brighten your days and return color to your life. You will feel happier to have someone so special by your side.
    If one thing is important to you, don't let others tell you what to do, just do what your heart commands. It is better to risk doing what you want than to later regret not doing it in due time.

      Same happened to me the first time I read this story. It's hard not to become so emotional when you realise there are still people who would give everything for others as a sign of real love and / or friendship.

    It is true, most times when you are going through a bad time or need someone to support you and give you your hand to get up, is that you really realize who is your true friend. During the course of our life we are forming bonds of friendship with different people, however very few are those who are willing to fall with you when everything falls apart around you, to cry with you when you feel that nothing makes sense and fail with you when you commit some mistake, and we feel that in the same way if something happens to that person, we will cross the "no man's land" to save him.

      Correct Alondra, even when many people can be with you in your good times, only few of them will do it in your hard times, and not more than the ones you can count with your fingers would risk them or give everything for you. A real friend not only help you by accepting everything but if necessary tells you what is right if you are wrong.

    To be honest, I think is an excellent story because it's about true friendship. I was surprised that the soldier has riskes and lost his life for his friend because I believe that in every day people who have a true friendship have the same experience as the soldier in the story. While, I was reading it I remembered a phrase that I read long time ago that said "who finds a friend finds a treasure". I think this sentence is totally true.

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table.  But the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.
