#011 THE TRIPLE FILTER TEST

In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem.
One day one fellow met the great philosopher and said, "Do you know what I just heard about your friend?"
"Hold on a minute," Socrates replied. "Before telling me anything I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test.".
"Triple filter?". asked the man
"That's right," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you're going to say. That's why I call it the triple filter test. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"
"No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and...".
"All right," said Socrates. "So you don't know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?" .
"No, on the contrary...". "So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, but you're not certain it's true. You may still pass the test though, because there's one filter left: the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?"
"No, not really." replied the man.
"Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?"
As we can see Socrates didn't listen to what that person wanted to say because it wasn't true, nor good, not even useful. Gossips are all around us, don't let them be part of your daily menu. Comment on what you understood and share it.
We must think before talking about another person without knowing the truth about what we're going to say. Its very important. Unfortunately, in this life, there are many people with bad intentions.. So be careful what you say about others and who is going to receive that information... Now when I'm about to hear a rumor about someone, I'll apply for the three filters! In fact, we all should : )..!
ReplyDeleteGreat, you've got the moral of the story :)
DeleteI think we shouldn't believe in everything that other people tell us about your or people near to you because this information could be false.
ReplyDeleteWe should also be careful when we want to say something about someone without knowing it's true.
Personally, I'll use the triple filter test of Socrates for recognize if the new information it's a warning or it's a gossip then I'll decide if it's correct to say.
That's true Grecia, but even if what they say is real we shouldn't care that much about what others say or think about us, don't get too concerned about it otherwise you could let them make you feel bad. People ought to focus more on what they do than in what others do.

ReplyDeletei absolutely agree with the reflection , you shouldn't hear bad things about another person , because you don't know if is true or false and too it's not good for your brain .Only an individual poor of mind and poor of heart , is interested in this.I recommend please you have to be different and a little intelligent .you can't change the world , but you can change your life.
DeleteExcellent article, I think that if a person tells you something about another person should be in you, with more reason if the person who tells you is not sure if that is false or true, good or bad and whether it serves or not.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I believe that we should to apply this little test in our daily life because before to talk about something we must be sure that this will contribute positively, otherwise only we waste our time.
ReplyDeleteAlso, could generate conflicts and gossips that would harm other people.
As far as I'm concerned, I will apply and share the triple filter test of Socrates with my family and friends.
