#018 THINGS AREN'T ALWAYS WHAT THEY SEEM

Two travelling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's guest room. Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied,

"Things aren't always what they seem."

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had, the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night's rest and they went to sleep on an old sofa.

When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field. The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen?

"The first man had everything, yet you helped him," she accused. "The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let the cow die."

"Things aren't always what they seem," the older angel replied.

"When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn't find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave him the cow instead."

"Things aren't always what they seem."

  1. It's "incredible" to see how some people are so ambitious, they have no idea that when they die, they won't take anything with them, I mean.. material things.. or money .. Once again, the soul is the most important "thing" because it'll be the only thing we take on the day of our death. A soul full of love, will be a soul that lives forever 💛 :) 🌸

    1. Many people spend their whole lives focusing on accumulating wealth, no matter what happens around them, they don't mind being coldhearted or even merciless, sooner or later God will apply his justice.

  2. That's why we can't judge someone or something if we first, don't take the time to try to undersatnd why someone do something that we consider bad or innappropriate...

    1. Yep but in fact we shouldn't judge anyone, that's God's work.

  3. I'm totally disagree about what the angel did, the cow didnt have the fault in anything. I mean, probably the angel had a good intention but for me that's not the solution. There are other ways to tell and explain her that what she doing is not correct and not just sacrificing others for save bad people.

It is much better to be a good person and not be selfish that you want all you have for yourself, because even the people who love you the most can leave you and at the end you stay alone.

    1. What do you mean by saying "other ways to tell and explain her that what she was doing is not correct and not just sacrificing other to save bad people"? you lost me, I mean the point is not the life of the cow, cus' sooner or later we will die and we don't know what will happen then maybe it's better than here :), but the point for me is not to prejudge or misjudge others. BTW don't say "I'm totally agree / disagree" say "I totally agree / disagree" The verb to be is not necessary cus it sounds as Spanglish.

  4. I mean that the angel didn't have to kill an animal or anyone to save the life of a selfish person.
I think I was confused in a part. But well, that's the main idea. I disagree about what the angel did.

    1. Oh I guess you misunderstood that part. She wasn't a selfish person, in fact that was the rich one. Now, talking about what the angel did, anyway we don't know what is beyond the door, I mean after we die, maybe there is something better :)

  6. I think the angels in the story meant if you do good don't public, help others, share things with your family and others. even if you had little.

  7. Never reject or judge someone, because when you are kind, the person will help you when you have problems and give you what you can give, friendship and respect makes people different.

  9. We don't have to prejudge anyone about the actions or decisions they take, because most of the time we just see things from an external view and say that's right or that's wrong, even if we don't do it with a bad intention we could harm someone, because that person had a reason to act that way. So we should learn to listen before judging.
