#051 YOU ARE NOT DEPRESSED, YOU ARE DISTRACTED (POEM)

The author Facundo Cabral wrote what you might call “a story about life” In fact it has happened to almost all of us, maybe everybody, however this poem should be music to our ears, especially when we are going through difficult situations. Enjoy it!

You are not depressed, you are distracted...

Distracted from the life that inhabits you.
You have a heart, a brain, a soul, a spirit,
so how can you feel poor and wretched?

Distracted from the life that surrounds you:
dolphins, forests, seas, mountains, rivers…

Don't be like those who suffer for one human being
when there are more than 7 billion
and living alone is not so bad,
I have a good time, deciding what I want to do
at each instant, and thanks to the solitude I know myself,
which is essential in order to live.

Don't be like those who feel old at 70,
forgetting that Moses directed the exodus at 80
and Rubinstein could play Chopin at 90
better than anyone, just to mention
two well-known cases.

You are not depressed; you are distracted.
That's why you think you have lost something,
which is impossible, because everything
was given to you.  You didn't even make
a single hair on your head
therefore you cannot own anything. Besides, life does not take things from you,
it frees you from things.
It lightens your load so you can fly higher,
so you can reach your prime.
It is a school in session from cradle to the grave,
which is why what you call problems are lessons, indeed.

You do not lose anyone;
the one who died simply went on ahead of us,
because we are all headed there.
Besides, the best of that person, love,
remains in your heart.  Who could say that Jesus is dead?  There is not death, only change.
The beginning and the end, which is to say,
life and death are inventions of the mind.

How you suffer when your child leaves,
you became used to thinking you are only a parent,
set the past aside and you will feel all of life.
Only the molecules dissolve ,
conciousness does not die with matter,
the light of conciousness will continue
illuminating the infinite roads of life.

And on the other side there are some wonderful people waiting for you: Gandhi, Michelangelo, Whitman, Russell, Chopin, Hauer, Bradbury,
Saint Augustine, Mother Teresa, your grandmother and my mother,
who believed that poverty is actually closer to
what we call "Love", because money distracts us
with too many things, and separates us by making us distrust one another.

Do only what you love and you will be happy;
the ones who do it, are blessedly sentenced to success,
which will happen when it should, naturally,
because what must be, will be.  Don't do anything out of obligation or commitment,
but rather out of love. There will then be plenitude in which everything is possible; and possible effortlessly because you are moved by the natural force of life, the one that picked me up when the airplane carrying my wife and daughter fell from the sky, the same that kept me alive when physicians gave me a prognosis of 3 or 4 more months to live.

God has put a human being in charge of you, and that is yourself; you must make yourself free and happy, and you will then be able to share the true life with others.

Remember Jesus: “You shall love one’s neighbour as thyself.”  Reconcile you to yourself,
put yourself in front of the mirror
and think that the creature that you are looking at,
is a masterpiece of God and decide right now
to be happy because happiness is acquired,
it is an achievement.
Besides, happiness is not a right but rather a duty,
because if you are not happy,
you are infecting the entire neighbourhood
with bitterness and also the lives of all those
who love you.

Just remember, a single man who had neither the talent, nor the courage to live, ordered six million Jewish siblings killed.

There are so many things to enjoy and our jorney here on earth is so short that suffering is a waste of time.  We can enjoy the winter snow; flowers of spring, Perugian chocolate, a French baguette, Mexican tacos, Brazilian soccer, The Thousand and One Nights, the Divine Comedy, Don Quixote, Pedro Paramo, Manzanero's boleros and poems written by Whitman, Mahler, Mozart, Chopin, Beethoven, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Velasquez, Picasso and Tamayo, among so many other wonders.

And if you have got cancer or AIDS or any terminal illness, only two things can happen and both are good.
If it beats you, it releases your body from so many things that can be so annoying sometimes: I am hungry, I am cold, I'm tired, I am right, I have doubts… And if you beat it, you will be more humble, more grateful, and therefore, much more easily happy.

Liberate yourself from the enormous weight of guilt, responsibility, and vanity, willing to live each moment profoundly, as it should be.

You are not depressed, you are idle.  Help the child who needs you,
think of what that child can achieve
and do for others with your help.  Help the elderly, and young people will help you
when get there.  In addition, service is  certain happiness, like enjoying nature and taking care of it for those yet to come. Give without measure and you will receive beyond measure.

Love till you become what is love,
even till you become love itself!

And don't let a few suicides and homicides distract you neither confuse you; good is in the majority,
it's just not noticeable because it's silent;
a bomb makes much more noise than a caress,
but for every bomb that destroys,
there are millions of caresses that nourishes life.

Good feeds off itself,
evil destroys itself,
the tumour might kill you,
but it will kill itself, too.

If the bad guys knew that being good is such a good business, they'd be good even if it were just for business.
If you could listen to your inner being,
you would know everything and find something for yourself in everything.

  1. From Angelica Valcarcel A:
Hi, beautiful poem, this teaches us that the most important thing in life is to be happy, deciding what we want to do at each moment and not cling to people or circumstances, this is harmful for us. Life is short, we should be grateful living each moment profoundly and helping the people.
Finally, I consider that this is the secret of success is this phrase:¨Do only what you love and you will be happy¨.

  2. Hello Angie, as you said life is too short to be lived angrily, but we should live it prodoundly, really deeply, and as your last quote which is one of the ones I consider the greatest thoughts. :)

  3. As far as I'm concerned, this is a poem with a great message. To be honest ideas such as that life does not take anything away from you, that we do not lose anyone and that the best of each person remains in our hearts I've heard before. These ideas seem to me to teach a great lesson that I have not yet learned. However, I hope that over the years I will be able to understand them completely and apply them in my life, when I do it my life will be much happier.

    1. Very good Jampier, generally speaking it does happen to everybody, people listen to sayings or phrases like the ones you said, however we easily forget them cus' we get distracted by different situation or things that we see or occur to us. We must grow, and never stop learning.

  4. Good evening
Personally, I consider it does exist and if you are depressed you have to do all that you want,
If you want to cry, do it!
if you want to scream, do it!
Throw everything you have inside, without repressing anything.
I think depression is a disease, but it’s almost a decision and it’s depends of you, If you wannna get out of this hole, you will do it.
Everybody say: “After the storm comes the calm”
I agree, because when you know more about yourself, you learn to love every piece of you, love is the key, but first love yourself, So everything you do it, do it with love.

  5. Very beautiful words but I’m afraid I disagree. Depression is a serious mental illness, and it’s not caused just because you are “distracted”. The text says different reasons why you have to be happy. However, for someone who suffers depression those reasons don’t really matter.
You may have good friends says, but your brain convinces you they hate you and you start isolating yourself little by little until you do not have them anymore.
No matter how many achieved goals you have, they are not enough because you are useless, or because you think you don’t deserve them.
You can have people who love you, but it doesn’t matter because you are afraid of loosing them because of your mental illness.
You can have tea and cookies, but no matter how many you eat because they will never fill the void you feel, and you will start eating a lot, or not eating at all.
You can have a pet, and probably that’s the only reason you’re still alive.
So, you can be depressed, not just distracted.
