#054 WHERE TO FIND HAPPINESS

Everyone wants to find happiness in life. No matter what our circumstances, and no matter what hand we are dealt, the search for true contentment is at the heart of everyone’s goals. The question, then, is how?  How are we supposed to even begin looking for it? There have been many touching stories told of the different ways people have sought and found their own version of happiness. For example, this police deputy chose to sit with an old man and wait together for his bus. That made the officer happy on a deeper level.
The story below captures the essence of one way that we could all look for happiness in our lives. A group of people were gathered in a room, and participated in a social, but ultimately, very psychological, experiment. At the end, each of them found out exactly what they could do to attain joy.

balloon finding happiness

 Once a group of 50 people were attending a seminar. Suddenly the speaker stopped and decided to do a group activity. He started giving each attendee one balloon. Each one was asked to write his/her name on it using a marker pen. Then all the balloons were collected and put in another room.
Now these delegates were let into that room and asked to find the balloon which had their name written within 5 minutes. Everyone was frantically searching for their name, colliding with each other, pushing around others and there was utter chaos.At the end of 5 minutes no one could find their own balloon. 

 Now each one was asked to randomly collect a balloon and give it to the person whose name was written on it. Within minutes everyone had their own balloon.
The speaker reflected on what this exercise meant, and then began, “This is happening in our lives. Everyone is frantically looking for happiness all around, not knowing where it is.
Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people. Give them their happiness; you will get your own happiness. And this is the purpose of human life…the pursuit of happiness.”

    The story is very interesting, it helps us to reflect on happiness. Sometimes we despair to find happiness without help from anyone and we believe that we ourselves are enough.
    In my opinion happiness is the decision of each person and we can find it in our loved ones and in ourselves; but we should see a panorama with positive things that enrich our soul.

      I partially agree with you Angie, I mean your last 2 lines are so clear to me, however frankly I believe that more than the help from other people what we need is to help others, to have initiative, this is what gives us satisfaction and happiness cus it is in ourselves. ☺

    this story is so interesting,This reading makes me think about my life purpose and I also clarify some doubts about how to find my happiness.
    Now that I know, I will start making my loved ones happy. The reading also makes you see that I shouldn't think only of myself because through my actions and ideas I can make many people happy

One afternoon, Socrates was standing outside the gates of Athens when he noticed a traveller who had been staring at him for a long time. Socrates asked the man why he had come to Athens. “I am thinking of moving to Athens”, the man said. “What is it like to live here?” He added. Socrates looked at him. “First, would you tell me what it was like in your home city?” The man replied: “Oh, it was awful. Everyone stabs you in the back and wants to steal money from you” Frowning, Socrates told him: “Well, you will find the same thing here. #043 THE WOODEN BOWL

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table.  But the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. “We must do something about father,” said the son. “I’ve had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.”  So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl!  When the family glanced in Grandfather’s direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone.
